The width of over 2,000 kilometres of rural roads in Muzaffarpur district is set to be increased under a government scheme aimed at improving transport infrastructure. As part of the plan, the minimum width of these roads will be expanded to 18 feet, allowing the smooth and safe movement of vehicles in both directions.

The initiative is expected to gain momentum following increased allocations in the Union Budget for strengthening the transport sector. With enhanced funding, the road-widening work is unlikely to face financial constraints and is expected to be completed within the timeline.

At present, several rural roads in the district are only 12 feet wide, posing safety risks, especially when vehicles approach from opposite directions. The situation becomes more hazardous during nighttime and foggy conditions, as many roads are flanked by agricultural fields or drainage ditches, increasing the risk of accidents.

Blocks such as Sakra, Kurhani and Aurai have a large number of narrow rural roads. According to the plan, the Rural Works Department will carry out the widening work in a phased manner across the district.

Once completed, the project is expected to significantly strengthen rural connectivity, improve transport facilities for farmers and traders, enhance public safety, and provide a boost to overall regional development.
