The operation of auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws will begin from Saturday under a new traffic plan, with Muzaffarpur divided into three zones to ensure smoother movement and reduce congestion.

The plan has been approved by District Magistrate Subrat Kumar Sen following a proposal submitted by the Municipal Commissioner, SDO (East) Tushar Kumar, and the Traffic DSP. Operations will now be regulated strictly according to the revised traffic framework.

Under the new system, all auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws will be identified through colour coding, a process that has already begun by the respective unions. Around 4,500 auto and e-rickshaws will operate on designated routes, while metered autos and e-rickshaws will function across urban areas and will be marked with the white colour code.

To prevent traffic congestion and ensure the free movement of ambulances and emergency vehicles, roads will be widened at key locations, and additional police personnel will be deployed at major intersections. Parking of auto-rickshaws and e-rickshaws at intersections has been completely prohibited, and vehicles must park at least 100 metres away from crossings. Violators will face penalties.

Reserved auto-rickshaws, primarily operating from the railway station and bus stand, will be allowed to operate across all three zones. Their number is estimated at around 600.

The administration has also announced strict action against traffic violations, including overloading, use of tinted windows, pressure horns, illegal signage, and unauthorised parking in urban areas.

Earlier, the Auto Rickshaw Employees’ Union and the E-Rickshaw Employees’ Union had submitted a proposal covering 22 routes. After detailed analysis, officials found overlapping routes and impractical alignments. Certain routes were deemed unsuitable for e-rickshaw operations due to road width, traffic load, and existing traffic flow. The final plan was prepared by redefining zones and routes based on operational feasibility.

Officials said the revised system is expected to bring better traffic discipline and provide relief to residents from congestion and parking-related issues.
