There is a misconception among many professionals that filing an Income Tax Return (ITR) is only necessary if their income falls within the taxable bracket or they have to pay tax. However, according to experts, filing an ITR is not just a legal formality, and citizens who do not pay direct tax on their income should also adopt the habit of filing it every year. The tax return filing has many financial benefits that strengthen an individual's financial position.
If you are one among those who believe tax filing is only for those who fall within the tax slab, then you are unaware of the implications of regular ITR filing for your future investments and financial plans.
ITR Filing Benefits For Non-Taxpayers
Claiming a Tax Refund
Let's say you do not fall in the taxable income slab excess; however, you might be investing in fixed deposit, Recurring Deposit or other fixed income schemes, or TDS might be deducted from your salary during the financial year 2025-26. If this is the case, then the only way to claim a refund is to file an ITR. When your actual tax liability is less than the deducted TDS, you are eligible for a tax return.
Carry Forward Losses
Losses incurred in the stock market, mutual funds, property, or business can be adjusted against future profits (Carry Forward Losses). This reduces your future tax liability. However, keep in mind that most losses can only be carried forward if you file your return by the due date.
Strong Financial Records
ITR is a widely accepted proof of income in major financial and other organisations. It helps you in getting an insurance policy, filing government tenders, scholarship applications, and getting business funding. It can help you in foreign travel as well.
Ease In Loan Process
ITR could be a crucial document to get approval while applying for a home loan, personal loan, or business loan. Banks or any other regular lender often ask for ITRs for the past 2-3 financial years. In such a scenario, regular ITR filing provides solid proof of your income and enhances your financial creditworthiness.
Strengthens Visa Applications
Many countries require ITR receipts as proof of income when processing tourist, business, or student visas for foreign travel. An ITR record for the last 2-3 years demonstrates your financial stability, which increases your chances of getting a visa.
Filing is mandatory even if your income is low
Under the Income Tax Act, filing ITR is mandatory under certain circumstances, even if your income is below the tax-free limit. If you have deposited more than Rs 1 crore in your current account; if you have spent more than Rs 2 lakh on foreign travel; or if you have paid an electricity bill of more than Rs 1 lakh in a year, then you need to file ITR.

File ITR before the deadline
If you made up your mind to file ITR, then missing the deadline may result in a late fee of up to Rs 5,000. However, if the total income does not exceed Rs 5 lakh, the maximum penalty is Rs 1,000. Timely filing saves you from this penalty and interest on the outstanding tax.
