Bank Holiday on January 1: As the world celebrates New Year's Day on January 1, 2026, many corporate and government offices will observe the holiday. However, in India, New Year's Day is not a nationwide bank holiday; instead, banks will remain open and operate as usual in most states.
Meanwhile, bank branches—both public and private sector—will be closed in select states and cities on the first day of the new year 2026. The holiday is combined with celebrations of Gaan-Ngai (also spelled Gaan Ngai), a significant festival in Northeast India.
States Where Banks Will Be Closed on January 1, 2026: Arunachal Pradesh (Itanagar), Manipur (Imphal), Meghalaya (Shillong), Mizoram (Aizawl), Nagaland (Kohima), Sikkim (Gangtok), Tamil Nadu (Chennai), and West Bengal (Kolkata).

Banks Will Remain Open In Major States
Except for the above-mentioned states, bank branches will remain operational in all other states of the nation. If someone is planning to visit a bank branch on January 1, the person should check the bank holiday calendar for their locality on the Reserve Bank of India's (RBI) official holiday list.
Digital Banking Services Remain Operational
Despite the closure of bank branches, digital banking services of all banks, which include net banking, UPI, ATMs, app-based mobile banking, and fund transfers (NEFT/RTGS/IMPS) via digital mode, will remain fully operational nationwide.
