Sensex Today: The domestic benchmark equity index tumbled as it closed more than 2% lower on Thursday. The Sensex, the index of the top 30 stocks on BSE, plunged 1,730 points or 2.05% to close the trading day at 82,536 points. On the other hand, Nifty 50, the index of the top 50 shares on NSE, dropped 530 points or 2.05% to settle at 25,267. Bank Nifty ended the day’s trade down 2.01% at Rs 51,860.
The Nifty Midcap 100 closed the session 1,350 points or 2.24% lower at 59,008, following the overall market sentiment. The decline in the index can be attributed to the escalating tensions in West Asia and SEBI’s new diktat on F&O cubing.
Some of the major losers on the Sensex were Larson & Toubro, Reliance Industries, Axis Bank, Asian Paints, Tata Motors, Bajaj Finance, Maruti, Bajaj Finserv, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Titan, Adani Ports and HDFC Bank. JSW Steel was the only gainer. In Asian markets, Hong Kong fell while Tokyo ended in positive territory. Markets in mainland China will be closed for the rest of the week due to the holiday.
European markets were mostly down. U.S. markets were slightly higher on Wednesday. Foreign institutional investors sold equities worth Rs 5,579.35 crore on Tuesday, according to exchange data. Brent crude, the global benchmark, rose 1.37 per cent to US$74.91 a barrel.
The rupee fell 14 paise to 83.96 (temporary) against the US dollar on Thursday, as the volatile geopolitical situation triggered a spike in crude oil prices and the domestic equity market suffered a sharp decline of over two per cent.
According to forex traders, the rupee’s decline was also accelerated by a strong U.S. currency fueled by China’s bullish market and a steady outflow of foreign funds.
