The BSE Sensex fell by almost 53 points on Tuesday due to weak market trends in Asian and European markets as well as new overseas fund withdrawals. The Sensex closed at 73,953.31, down 52.63 points or 0.07 percent. Throughout the day, it reached a high of 74,189.19 and a low of 73,762.37.
On the other hand, the NSE's Nifty closed 27.05 points or 0.12 percent higher at 22,529.05. Nestle, Maruti, IndusInd Bank, ICICI Bank, Hindustan Unilever, Larsen & Toubro, Tata Consultancy Services, Infosys, HDFC Bank, and Axis Bank were the key laggards among Sensex constituents.

Tata Steel, JSW Steel, Power Grid, Tech Mahindra, and State Bank of India were among the gainers. In Asian markets, Seoul, Tokyo, Shanghai, and Hong Kong all fell. European markets were trading in negative territory. Wall Street was mainly higher on Monday.
According to stock exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold Rs 92.95 crore worth of equities on Saturday. The global oil benchmark Brent crude dropped 0.55 percent to $83.25 a barrel. On Saturday, the BSE benchmark closed 88.91 points or 0.12 percent higher at 74,005.94 during a special trading session. The NSE Nifty increased 35.90 points or 0.16 percent to 22,502.
On May 18, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) and BSE held a special trading session in the equity and equity derivatives segment to check their preparedness to deal with major disruptions or failures at the primary site. Markets were closed on Monday due to the Mumbai municipal elections.
The rupee closes 6 paise higher
The Indian rupee closed 6 paise higher at 83.31 against the US dollar on Tuesday on the softening of crude oil prices in the international markets and the dollar's decline against major global currencies. However, forex traders said a subdued trend in domestic equity markets capped sharp gains in the local currency.
At the interbank foreign exchange market, the local unit opened stronger at 83.32 and touched an intra-day high of 83.26 and a low of 83.36. The rupee finally settled at 83.31 (provisional), up 6 paise against its previous close.
