Opening Gates Of STEM For Girls With Women-Only Hostels

In one of the key measures announced for women upskilling and empowerment, the FM announced that the government will establish one girls' hostel in every district across the country. This initiative is designed to address the challenges of 'prolonged hours of study and laboratory work' that often deter women from pursuing advanced scientific research. It is intended to increase the enrolment of girls in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields.

New Institutions And University Townships

The 2026 Budget lays strong emphasis on investment in education. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman proposed measures to strengthen industry-academia linkages, including the establishment of a National Institute of Design in eastern India and the opening of five university townships near major industrial and logistics corridors.

Small Businesses Set To Become Champions

Recognising MSMEs as the backbone of the economy, Budget 2026 unveiled a three-pronged support strategy covering equity, liquidity, and professional assistance. Under this, a Rs 10,000 crore SME Growth Fund will be launched, while the Atmanirbhar Bharat Fund will receive Rs 2,000 crore. To reduce the compliance burden, a cadre of 'Corporate Mitras' will be created in Tier-II and Tier-III cities.

Union Budget 2026: SHE Mart For Women Entrepreneurs

A key announcement in the speech was the creation of Self-Help Entrepreneur (SHE) Marts, aimed at women-led enterprises in rural areas. These marts will function as community-owned retail outlets and will be housed within cluster-level federations of self-help groups.

This announcement builds on the Central government's Lakpati Didi initiative, which aim for at least Rs 1 lakh income for women in Self help group in a year.

Jobs, Skills, and Better Healthcare

Budget 2026 focuses on creating new healthcare career pathways for the youth. The government plans to add 1 lakh allied health professionals and train 1.5 lakh caregivers over the next five years. The Budget proposes the establishment of three new All India Institutes of Ayurveda, the launch of NIMHANS-2, and a 50 per cent capacity expansion in district hospitals through new emergency and trauma care centres. To promote medical value tourism, five regional medical hubs will also be developed.

No Major Announcement For Middle Class

Budget 2026 brought no major tax relief announcements that many in the middle class had been hoping for. There was widespread expectation that the standard deduction limit would be raised from Rs 75,000 to Rs lakh, but that did not happen.

As a result, the middle class has not received any direct or significant gains from this Budget on the tax front. That said, a few announcements are likely to bring indirect benefits. These include exemption of customs duty on medicines used for cancer and diabetes treatment.

In addition, reductions in customs duty on several everyday products mean that items such as footwear, slippers, smartphones, and various other consumer goods are set to become more affordable.

High-speed Rail Corridors Announced

Budget 2026 gives a major push to high-speed rail connectivity. The government has proposed seven high-speed rail corridors, including Hyderabad–Chennai, Mumbai–Pune, Pune–Hyderabad, Delhi–Varanasi, and Varanasi–Siliguri.

The objective of these projects is to significantly reduce travel time, support urban development, and stimulate economic activity across the connected regions.

Boost For Medical, Heritage, And Cultural Tourism

To accelerate growth in the tourism sector, Budget 2026 proposes the development of five regional medical hubs equipped with AYUSH centres and post-care facilities.

The existing Hotel Management Council will be upgraded into a full-fledged National Institute of Hospitality. Heritage tourism will receive a strong fillip through the Buddhist Circuit projects in the North-East, the creation of a National Destination Digital Knowledge Grid, and the development of 15 prominent archaeological sites.
