AFG vs SA T20 World Cup 2026: Afghanistan's star all-rounder Mohammad Nabi has been fined 15 percent match fee after breaking the ICC Code of Conduct during the T20 World Cup 2026 match against South Africa in Ahmedabad.
WHAT DID NABI DO?
The incident happened before the beginning of the 14th over, where Nabi got involved in a heated argument with the umpires about the wristband which Lungi Ngidi was wearing. Due to this, Nabi has breached Article 2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct, which pertains to disobeying the umpire.
On-field umpires Jayaraman Madanagopal and Sharfuddoula Ibne Shahid had levelled this charge along with the third and fourth umpires. It's a Level 1 offence under the ICC Code of Conduct, which includes a lot of penalties like a fine of up to 50 percent of match fees, along with one or two demerit points.
"Afghanistan player Mohammad Nabi has been fined 15 per cent of his match fee for breaching Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during their ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 Group D match against South Africa in Ahmedabad on Wednesday," the statement released by ICC said.
"Nabi was found to have breached Article 2.4 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which relates to "Disobeying an Umpire’s instruction during an International Match.”
"In addition to this, one demerit point has been added to Nabi’s disciplinary record, for whom it was the first offence in 24 months," read the statement from ICC.
Following the match officials’ assessment, one demerit point was added to Nabi’s disciplinary record. This marks Nabi’s first such offence in the last 24 months. The ICC regulations stipulate that the accumulation of demerit points over two years can lead to further sanctions, including possible suspensions.
No formal hearing was required in this case. Nabi accepted the charge and the accompanying sanction. The incident happened during one of the instant classics in T20 World Cup history as South Africa and Afghanistan played out two Super Overs to decide the winner.
