Ashes 2025, AUS vs ENG 5th Test: England pacer Gus Atkinson has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test match against Australia in the ongoing Ashes series due to a hamstring injury. The fifth Test is scheduled to be played from January 4 to 8 at the iconic Sydney Cricket Ground.

Atkinson, who hasn't been at his best in the five-match Test series so far, sustained the injury during the fourth Test at the MCG. He becomes England's third fast bowler to leave the tour through injury after Mark Wood (knee) and Jofra Archer (side strain). On the second day of the Melbourne Test, Atkinson removed nightwatchman Scott Boland in the morning session but appeared to strain his hamstring while running in to bowl the final ball of his fifth over.

He left the field clutching his left hamstring and immediately walked down the tunnel to receive medical attention in the England dressing room. Atkinson was replaced by substitute fielder Ollie Pope. While England gear up to take the field for their pride in the final Test, they have decided not to call any replacement in the squad for Atkinson.

Having already lost the Ashes series, England got something to cheer about as they won the fourth Test in Melbourne inside two days by four wickets. There is cover in the squad, with Durham seamer Matthew Potts yet to feature in the ongoing series, and Surrey's Matthew Fisher (Surrey) an option, having been promoted from the England Lions squad after Wood returned home following the second Test.

The visitors also have Shoaib Bashir in the squad as an option if they want to add another spin option alongside Will Jacks. England will be taking the field in Sydney with high confidence and will be hoping to maintain the momentum to get another consolation win. The famous win in Melbourne was England's first on Australian soil since the 2010/11 tour.
