Ashes 2025: Travis Head has backed his fellow teammate Jake Weatherald and revealed that one should be patient with Jake, as he has been struggling in the ongoing Test series. Talking about Weatherald's inconsistent performances, Head revealed that Jake has shown a lot of potential and has proved his worth to meet the demands of international cricket.
Head, who shared a close bond with Weatherald, emphasised that struggles in the early stages of a career are quite common.
“International cricket is extremely tough. The wickets have been challenging across the board the last few years, that’s well-documented, Head was quoted as saying on ESPNCricinfo.
Weatherald, who has played in the first 4 matches, has played inconsistently as he failed to score runs against a formidable attack, which also gave set batters a hard time. And as Head, these numbers of the whole story.
“It’s not an excuse, and I think he’s a good enough cricketer for international cricket. I think he showed a lot of glimpses over his first four Tests,” he added.
He also emphasised how many star players have been in similar situations earlier in their careers and, especially when playing in high-octane matches like the Ashes, where expectations are high.

“It’s not always gonna go your way, and there’s a lot of guys who look like they have been under the pump with the bat who are the best of our generation,” he added.
He also talked about how playing in such an environment can make learning challenging and that Weatherald has the skills to make a brilliant comeback.
“It can be a tough way to start your international career. But I think he’s a good enough player to play international cricket,” he concluded.
Weatherald's Test struggle has raised concerns about the host opening combinations. Head also shared the same thought that the players take time to perform well at this level.
Post watching Weatherald at domestic cricket, Head revealed that continuity and confidence will play an important role in helping him perform consistently. Since the host will be analysing their top-order batters for the next few months, Weatherald’s future might depend on patience.
Head’s statement has made it clear that they have seen enough potential in Weatherald’s game.
