T20 World Cup 2026: In a huge development in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, the 2021 champions Australia have been knocked out of the tournament on Tuesday. Notably, Zimbabwe became the seventh team to qualify for the Super Eight stage after their Group B encounter against Ireland got abandoned due to rain.
The cut-off time for a 5-over game was around 6:10 pm local time, however, the conditions at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium were not fit to play with constant drizzling. In the end, the umpires decided to call off the match.
Notably, this is also the end of the road for Ireland in the tournament.
T20 World Cup 2026 Points Table Update For Group B:
It is also worth noting that Table-toppers Sri Lanka (6) have qualified for the Super Eight from this group. The Sikandar Raza-led side will join them with five points in their tally.
Zimbabwe needed only one more point to qualify for the Super Eight stage as they were comfortably sitting in second position with four points in their account. On the other hand, Australia, which suffered successive defeats in the group stage to Zimbabwe and Sri Lanka, had no option but to depend on the outcome of this match.
A win for Lorcan Tucker-led side in this game would have saved the T20 World Cup-campaign for both Australia and Ireland, but to no avail.
Zimbabwe had defeated Australia by 23 runs after outclassing Oman by eight wicket in their opening match. Ireland, on the other hand lost their first two games against Sri Lanka and Australia before registering a 96-run win over Oman in their last match.
Not the first time for Australia!
The mighty Aussies, who serve as formidable opponents in any tournament, has been knocked out in the group stage before. Earlier, the Ricky Ponting-led side was knocked from the group stage in 2009.
Australia will face Oman in their final group stage against Oman on Friday (February 20).
Zimbabwe to face India on this date!
With their qualification, Zimbabwe has set up clash against co-hosts India at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on February 26.
