Champions Trophy 2025: England Test skipper Ben Stokes has been all but ruled out from the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will be held in Pakistan, and also from the white-ball series against India as the ECB announced the squads on Sunday. Stokes didn't make it to the team for the of these series as he had sustained a left hamstring injury in the third Test match against New Zealand.

Stokes didn't even bat during the second innings in an attempt to help the team that suffered a batting collapse as they lost the match by 423 runs, despite winning the three-match series by 2-1.

Since England would be hosting India for a five-match Test series in June next year and then the highly-awaited Ashes Test series, the team management didn't want to take any risk since Stokes is also the Test skipper.

But, star Joe Root, who was England's former Test skipper, would be making a comeback to the ODI team after a long time since the 2023 ODI World Cup.

Pacer Mark Wood, who wasn't part of the Test series against Pakistan and New Zealand, owing to a right elbow injury, is included in both teams.

The white-ball series against India and the 2025 Champions Trophy would be England's white-ball series and it's the first time that Brendon McCullum would be coaching the side, as he earlier used to just coach the Test team.

Buttler stays as captain

Jos Buttler would be leading the team from the front even though England failed to defend their T20 World Cup and ODI World Cup titles.

There are high chances that he won't be the wicket-keeper as he is toward the fag-end of his white-ball career.

England's ODI teams for the series against India and the Champions Trophy already have two wicket-keepers- Jamie Smith, who gave the New Zealand Test series a miss due to the birth of his child, and Phil Salt.

At the same time youngster Jacob Bethell, who had a dream debut Test series against New Zealand, where he scored three consecutive half-centuries, is a part of both teams.

Leg-spinner Rehan Ahmed is included in the T20I team, whereas Joe Root would only be playing in the ODIs.

England would be landing India on January 17 and the series opener of the five-match T20I series would be held in Kolkata on January 22.

India and England will then clash for a three-match ODI series as part of their preparation for the Champions Trophy, which will be held in Nagpur from February 6.

The schedule for the 2025 Champions Trophy, which will feature teams from Pakistan, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, hasn't been announced yet despite the tournament starting from February 19 to March 9.
