Chennai Super Kings have confirmed the appointment of former India pacer Zaheer Khan as their new head coach ahead of the IPL 2027 season. The 2011 World Cup winner will take charge of the five-time IPL champions after the departure of long-serving coach Stephen Fleming.
Zaheer, who was a key member of MS Dhoni’s World Cup-winning Indian team in 2011, now begins a new chapter in his coaching career with one of the most successful franchises in IPL history.

Zaheer Khan Replaces Stephen Fleming
The appointment brings an end to the speculation surrounding Fleming’s successor. CSK have named Zaheer as the head coach for IPL 2027, with the former India pacer replacing Fleming, who had been in charge of the franchise since 2009.
Fleming stepped down in July 2026 after an 18-year association with CSK. During his tenure, the franchise won five IPL titles and two Champions League T20 trophies.
Zaheer now inherits a team that missed the IPL playoffs for the third consecutive season in 2026, making the upcoming season an important one for the franchise.
Zaheer Khan was also happy taking over the responsibilties.
“Honestly, I’m extremely happy to have been given the responsibility of such a big franchise like CSK. I would like to thank the management for putting their trust in me. I hope to work closely with the entire management, captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, MS Dhoni and everyone involved, and help CSK win the trophy.
I’ll be meeting the CSK fans very soon, and I’m really excited for IPL 2027. I’m also looking forward to working with MS Dhoni,” he said.
Zaheer Khan’s India Career
Zaheer was one of India’s best fast bowlers during the 2000s and early 2010s. He played a crucial role in India’s run to the 2011 ODI World Cup title on home soil.
The left-arm pacer finished the tournament as one of India’s leading wicket-takers and formed an important part of Dhoni’s bowling attack.
His experience of playing under Dhoni could now prove valuable as the two former India teammates enter a new phase of their association at CSK.
What Does Zaheer’s Appointment Mean For CSK?
Zaheer’s arrival means a major change in CSK’s coaching structure after almost two decades under Fleming. His experience as a former international cricketer, along with his understanding of franchise cricket, will be central to his new role.
Zaheer Khan has brilliant experience in the IPL having served both Mumbai Indians and Lucknow Super Giants as a mentor and strategist. As a player, Zaheer picked up 102 wickets in 100 IPL matches as a fast bowler.
