Former Pakistan captain Zaheer Abbas has backed Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli to feature in the 2027 ODI World Cup, saying their experience and batting ability remain valuable for India despite questions over their age.

The 2027 World Cup will be held in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and there has been plenty of discussion about whether Rohit and Kohli should continue until the tournament. By then, Rohit will be 40, while Kohli will be 39.

Abbas, popularly known as the ‘Asian Bradman’, believes age should not decide their future. He feels both senior batters still have plenty to offer if they stay fit and continue performing.

While Kohli had a quiet ODI series against England, which India lost 2-1, Rohit impressed with a brilliant century in the final match. Amid retirement rumours, the India captain smashed 138 off 110 balls while chasing 388 at Lord’s, becoming the first Indian batter to score an ODI hundred at the iconic venue.

The knock also made Rohit only the second batter after Joe Root to score eight ODI centuries in England.

Abbas was full of praise for Rohit’s batting but also stressed the importance of maintaining fitness.

Rohit and Virat, who recently featured in the three-match ODI series against England, will now be seen playing in the three-match ODI series against West Indies which is scheduled to start from September 27.
