ENG vs AUS: Lancashire pacer Saqib Mahmood has been included in England's ODI squad for the upcoming series against Australia and he would be thus making his comeback to the ODIs. Mahmood hasn't played in this format since March last year as he had sustained multiple stress fractures in his back but he was selected in the squad on the back of his brilliant performances in international cricket.
Mahmood had a successful stint in the recently concluded T20I series against the Mitchell Marsh-led side, where he registered figures of 2/21 in the series opener at Southampton. He had taken eight wickets after playing in 14 ODIs at a brilliant average of 22.85 and his selection boosts their bowling lineup as they gear up for the five-match ODI series.
At the same time, skipper Jos Buttler has been ruled out from this series due to a right calf injury. Harry Brook will be replacing him as he has been named as the stand-in skipper. It will be the first time that he would be leading the team from the front in any format although he did lead Yorkshire in T20 Blast and Northern Superchargers during the Hundred.
England did face another huge blow as Josh Hull was also ruled out due to a quad injury. Hull, who shone with the ball in his debut Test series against Sri Lanka, would be replaced by Liam Livingstone. Livingstone, who was in sublime form in the T20I series, wasn't included in the ODI squad initially but will now aim to prove his naysayers wrong. He recently had a successful stint as a No.4 batter in the shortest format and will aim to repeat his heroics in the 50-over format as well.
Talking about his plans ahead of the ODI series, he said, "I've shown over the last month that the longer I get to bat, the more I can affect games. I'm looking forward to making an impact."
The much-awaited ODI series would begin on September 19 at Trent Bridge.
