Former India cricketer S Badrinath has raised questions over the selection of Washington Sundar and Nitish Kumar Reddy in India's squad for the upcoming three-match T20I series against Afghanistan.
The India vs Afghanistan T20I series is scheduled to take place at Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi from September 13, and the BCCI announced a 15-member squad with several players returning after injury concerns. However, Badrinath was not convinced by the inclusion of Sundar and Reddy, and suggested that head coach Gautam Gambhir’s preferences could have influenced some of the decisions.
Sundar receive strong backing from the BCCI?
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Badrinath pointed out that Sundar has continued to receive strong backing despite his recent performances.
Why Badrinath question Nitish Kumar Reddy's selection?
Badrinath was also critical of Nitish Kumar Reddy, especially when it comes to his bowling. While he acknowledged Reddy’s abilities as a batter, the former India player said he does not see him as a convincing bowling all-rounder at this stage.
India’s squad for the Afghanistan series includes some notable comebacks. Jasprit Bumrah, Washington Sundar, Nitish Kumar Reddy and Harshit Rana have all been picked, although they will still need fitness clearance from the BCCI’s Centre of Excellence before taking part in the series.

Badrinath on Bumrah's inclusion in India squad
Badrinath, however, had no doubts about the importance of Bumrah’s return. With India also preparing to defend their Asian Games gold medal later this month in Japan, he believes having the star pacer back in the mix is a major boost.
He also felt Bumrah could have personally asked to return to competitive cricket after spending a period on the sidelines.
“Bumrah might have spoken to Gambhir or the selection committee and said he wants to play because he hasn’t played cricket for long. So it could have been Bumrah’s option,” he added.
Bumrah was last seen in action during India’s ODI series in England in July. He then missed the tour of Sri Lanka after suffering a left knee injury.
If he receives the required fitness clearance, the Afghanistan series could give Bumrah the chance to get back into the rhythm of international cricket before India enter another busy phase of their calendar.
