IND vs SA T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8s: India will lock horns with South Africa during its first Super 8s clash at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, which will also be a repeat of the 2024 T20 World Cup summit clash. Both teams had been unbeaten till now, but neither of them is perfect.
The Suryakumar Yadav-led side did suffer a few batting collapses, even though they have a brilliant record, whereas South Africa faced two thrilling super overs against Afghanistan to qualify for the Super 8s.
With everything at stake, the result of the upcoming clash might depend on a few individual battles.
Let's take a look at three key battles to watch out for:
Abhishek Sharma vs Marco Jansen
Abhishek Sharma had set the tone for India's high-octane reset in this format. But still, he had a forgetful outing in this World Cup.
He has played just eight balls in three matches and has gotten out on duck in all these matches. This is exactly the opposite of this image. Since the beginning of 2025, no other batter after playing in 10 matches has scored as quickly as Abhishek Sharma's 195.83 during a powerplay.

If he wants to rebuild this form, then he must face Marco Jansen.
This Protea all-rounder is known for disrupting powerplay as he can turn the tide of a game early. Since last year, he has taken eight wickets during the first six overs in the shortest format at a brilliant strike rate of 14.2 and an economy rate of 10.5. He gave the last group stage match against the UAE a miss but was adjudged the Player of the match award for the clash against New Zealand, as he had taken four wickets.
But history favours Abhishek Sharma.
He has scored 98 runs off 45 balls against Jansen since their last few meetings and has gotten out only once. During the white-ball series last year, he had scored 49 runs off 23 balls against him. During IPL 2025, he had scored 38 runs off 11 balls against him.
Varun Chakaravarthy vs Dewald Brevis
Varun Chakravarthy has been India's star performer in the ongoing mega event till now.
He is the second-highest wicket-taker as he has taken nine wickets at a brilliant economy rate of 6.88. On pitches that assist, it has been hard facing him. He had taken six of those wickets during the middle overs, where he had given just 5.77 runs and had taken a wicket after every nine balls.
It's the same phase when Dewald Brevis becomes the most dangerous.
Brevis hasn't performed well in the ongoing mega event till now, but has performed well against spinners. After the 2024 T20 World Cup, he has scored runs against spinners at a strike rate of 189.58, which is the most among batters after facing 55 balls. During the 7 to 15 overs, his strike rate is 196.03.
The head-to-head record between these players shows another picture.
Since the last few bilateral series, Brevis has scored 24 runs off 12 balls, and Varun hasn't taken his wicket. But during their last two meetings, Varun had dismissed him twice, once in an international match and once in IPL, and gave away just one run both times.
Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav vs Keshav Maharaj
The one area where the Indian batters haven't been consistent is the pace against slower deliveries.
This has put the focus on Tilak Varma and Suryakumar Yadav, who bat at No.3 and No.4 positions. They play as the middle-order batters, and this is the time when the Proteas will try to attack.
Tilak has batted at a strike rate of 125.37 against left-arm orthodox spin since last year, whereas Suryakumar has batted at 143.47, which is well below their career rates. During the ongoing mega event, these numbers have further gone down to 120 and 100. It's not a dramatic downfall, but enough to stop the momentum.
And that's when Keshav Maharaj will strive.
When both Tilak and Suryakumar Yadav are in the middle, the Proteas will try to take the game deep to the 7 to 15 overs. George Linde is the other option, who can provide an added depth to their bowling attack.
The head-to-head record is quite balanced. Maharaj had gotten Tilak out for a golden duck and then took just four balls to do the same during their next meeting. After that, Tilak had scored 51 runs off 23 balls without getting out in his over.
Maharaj has never taken the wicket of Suryakumar. Their record in bilateral series has been quite aggressive as Surya has scored 46 runs off 35 balls. But in the 2022 T20 World Cup, Surya had scored 25 runs off 12 balls in his over and had smashed three fours and one six.
