But according to a media report, the Indian team's management can relax, as a 'fresh' pitch will be used in Chennai for the match against Zimbabwe.
As per the Times of India report, the Suryakumar Yadav-led side landed in Chennai on Monday ahead of their must-win clash against Zimbabwe. Post losing to South Africa by 76 runs during their first Super 8s match, they are now lying in third position in the points table.
Apart from them struggling against spinners, the Indian batters are also having a hard time facing fast bowlers, and this weakness was exposed during their match against South Africa. Usually, the pitch at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium is spin-friendly, and its slow nature can help Zimbabwe bowlers stop the Indian batters from scoring big. But the surface has behaved differently this time.
The report revealed that before this World Cup, the surface was dug up and one of the strips was completely rebuilt. The TNCA ensured that no cricket match was held at this stadium for the past five months to keep the pitch fresh.
As a result, the ball will come to the batter better. During the first match of the ongoing mega event here between New Zealand and Afghanistan, Noor Ahmad was dropped from the playing XI, and Afghanistan couldn't defend a target of 182 runs, with the Kiwis reaching it in 17.5 overs.
During the New Zealand vs UAE match, the ball wasn't gripping or turning as much. The Mitchell Santner-led side chased the target of 176 runs in just 15.1 overs.
After just two night matches in this World Cup, whichever team has batted first has won comprehensively, successfully defending targets of 196 and 200. And that's why Suryakumar Yadav will choose to bat first if he wins the toss on Thursday.
The host will also try to make some changes in their playing XI for the match against Zimbabwe. Sanju Samson might come in as an opener, whereas Ishan Kishan might replace the out-of-form batter Tilak Varma as the No.3 batter. Experts have also suggested having an extra spinner during the middle overs, as Kuldeep Yadav is a strong contender.
The Men in Blue not only have to defeat Zimbabwe to qualify for the semis but also win by a huge margin to improve their NRR. West Indies are currently the table toppers after hammering Zimbabwe by 107 runs, whereas South Africa are lying in second place.
