India ODI World Cup 2023 Squad: No Ashwin, Chahal, Samson As India Name 15-member Squad

With Only One Specialist Spinner, Three Pacers, Two All-rounders And Five Batters: Check India's predicted playing 11 in the ODI World Cup 2023.

India have named their 'best' 15-member squad for the upcoming home ODI World Cup 2023, starting on October 5, on Tuesday. The biggest talking point of the squad was the exclusion of spinners Yuzvendra Chahal and Ravichandran Ashwin from the marquee event.

During the Asia Cup 2023 squad announcement, both India skipper Rohit Sharma and selection committee chairman Ajit Agarkar admitted that Chahal was not out of the World Cup squad at that point and he was in consideration for the continental tournament as well.

"It is a totally different format and you play lot of league matches and you know there is lot of time for comeback. Last time we saw how England came back and went all the way. It gives you time to think about combination and lot plan accordingly. We had to beat Pakistan, South Africa to qualify for semis in the T20 World Cup. Here even if you don't start well, you can still comeback and make the semis. 50 overs does give breathing space."

"Every time it happens. That's nothing new. We have seen this in cricket for many years. We will do what is best for the team. Some players will miss out and that is normal," says Rohit Sharma after picking a 15-member squad.

"No pressure. Just want to go out there and play to our best of abilities," said India skipper Rohit Sharma on playing the ODI World Cup 2023 in India.

"We have been discussing a lot of names. Lot of them pick themselves and we had some fitness issues which we had to wait. All three coming from long term injuries. Rahul is recovering and from there it is all about picking the strongest squad," Ajit Agarkar added when asked about any name that came for discussion during squad selection.

India's squad for ODI World Cup 2023: Rohit Sharma (c), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, Ishan Kishan, KL Rahul, Hardik Pandya (vc), Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav.

Sanju Samson, Prasidh Krishna and Tilak Varma are set to miss a place in India's ODI World Cup 2023 squad. These three are part of India's Asia Cup 2023 squad in Sri Lanka.

Chairman of selection committee Ajit Agarkar and India skipper Rohit Sharma will name the 15-member squad soon in Kandy. The press conference is scheduled to take place at 1:30 PM.

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri said he will keep both all-rounders Axar Patel and Shardul Thakur in India's World Cup squad while Sanju Samson will be on the reserve list.

“I think to be fair, I will go with both the all-rounders – Axar and Shardul, it gives me an opportunity. And keep Sanju Samson on standby in case something happens to the keeper there, where he can just fly out,” he told Star Sports.

The 15-member Indian squad picked by Matthew Hayden: Rohit Sharma (C), Jasprit Bumrah, Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Sanju Samson, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav, Ravindra Jadeja, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj, Shardul Thakur, Ishan Kishan and Axar Patel.

In the spin bowling department, chinaman spinner Kuldeep Yadav is expected to be the first-choice spinner in the squad. Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to be included in the reserve while ace spinner Ravichandran Aswin is not expected to make a cut in the squad.

"When we came here we knew what our World Cup 15 is going to be like, the Asia Cup was not going to give us a better picture because it was only two games. But luckily we got to bat in the first game and bowl in this, so that made it a complete game for us. Still have a lot to work on. Lot of guys coming back from injuries and they need time to get back into the groove. Hardik and Ishan were very good in the last game to get us to that score. The bowling was okay today but the fielding was bad, we need to improve on that," he said after the 10-wicket win over Nepal on Monday.

As many as three players including Sanju Samson, Tilak Varma and Prasidh Krishan, who are part of the Asia Cup 2023 squad, will miss out on India's World Cup squad.

With KL Rahul set to be the first-choice wicketkeeper for the ODI World Cup after recovering from a thigh injury. The question will be on the selection of Ishan Kishan Or Sanju Samson as the former has been backed in the absence of Rahul and is in top form in the middle order. On the other hand, Samson is struggling to get runs under his belt in the recent limited-overs series against West Indies and Ireland.
