Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) batter Tim David has been handed a one-match suspension for the next IPL season after violating the IPL Code of Conduct during the IPL 2026 final against the Gujarat Titans (GT) at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

The disciplinary action comes just days after RCB lifted their second consecutive IPL trophy with a five-wicket win over GT in the final. Tim David penalised for incident during IPL 2026 final

According to an official IPL statement, David breached Article 2.9 of the IPL Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials.

The article relates to: “throwing a ball (or any other item of cricket equipment such as a water bottle) at or near a Player, Team Official, Umpire, Match Referee or any other third person in an inappropriate and/or dangerous manner during a Match.”

Why Tim David banned?

The incident occurred during the 10th over of Gujarat Titans’ innings. After a wicket fell, David allegedly threw an ice bag aggressively in the direction of on-field umpire Nitin Menon.

The matter was reviewed after the match, and David admitted to the offence. He also accepted the punishment imposed by Match Referee Javagal Srinath.

As part of the sanction, the Australian batter was fined 50 per cent of his match fee and received two Demerit Points.

Five Demerit Points lead to suspension

The latest offence turned out to be costly because it was David’s third Level 1 breach of the IPL Code of Conduct during the 2026 season.

Earlier in the tournament, he had received one Demerit Point in Match 20 and two more in Match 54. The two points added after the final took his overall tally to five Demerit Points.

Under IPL rules, a player who accumulates five Demerit Points is automatically suspended for one match.

Tim David to miss IPL 2027 opener clash

As a result, David will miss the opening game of IPL 2027, regardless of which franchise he represents next season.

The suspension has put a slight dent in what was otherwise a memorable campaign for RCB. The Bengaluru-based side successfully defended their title and became only the third team in IPL history, after Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians, to win back-to-back championships.
