Gujarat Titans captain Shubman Gill added another big achievement to his IPL career after joining an elite group of captains who have scored 500 or more runs in multiple IPL seasons. With this, he joined legends like Virat Kohli, David Warner and Sachin Tendulkar on the special list.
Gill reached the milestone during Gujarat Titans’ match against Kolkata Knight Riders at Eden Gardens, where he played a brilliant knock of 85 off just 49 balls. His innings included five fours and seven sixes, and he batted at a strike rate of over 173.
The GT skipper has been in excellent form this season. In 12 matches so far, he has scored 552 runs at an average of 46 and a strike rate above 160. He has already hit five half-centuries and is currently the second-highest run-scorer of the season, just behind his opening partner Sai Sudharsan, who has 554 runs.
Shubman Gill Joins Elite List
This is the second time Gill has crossed the 500-run mark in an IPL season as captain. Last year, he scored 650 runs in 15 innings at an average of 50, including six fifties, and finished among the top run-getters of the tournament.
David Warner still holds the record for the most 500-plus seasons as an IPL captain. He achieved the feat three times for Sunrisers Hyderabad between 2016 and 2018. KL Rahul also has three such seasons while leading Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants.
Meanwhile, Sachin Tendulkar achieved it twice for Mumbai Indians in 2010 and 2011, while Virat Kohli did it for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2015 and his unforgettable 2016 season, where he scored 973 runs.
Gill has also enjoyed batting against his former side, KKR over the years. In six innings against them, he has scored 356 runs at an average close to 60, including three fifties. His highest score against Kolkata is 90.
GT vs KKR Match
Talking about the match, Gujarat Titans chose to bowl first after winning the toss. Kolkata Knight Riders made full use of the batting-friendly conditions. After captain Ajinkya Rahane got out early, Finn Allen and Angkrish Raghuvanshi launched a strong counterattack.
Allen was especially destructive, smashing 93 runs from just 35 balls with 10 sixes. He and Raghuvanshi added 95 runs quickly to put GT under pressure. After Allen’s dismissal, Raghuvanshi continued the attack and built another big partnership with Cameron Green.
Raghuvanshi remained unbeaten on 82 from 44 balls, while Green finished with 52 not out from 28 deliveries. Their efforts helped KKR post a massive total of 247/2 in 20 overs.
Mohammed Siraj and Sai Kishore picked up one wicket each for Gujarat.
GT's Chase
Chasing a huge target, Gujarat Titans got off to a decent start despite Sai Sudharsan retiring hurt early in the innings. Shubman Gill and Jos Buttler kept GT in the game with a 128-run partnership.
Buttler scored 57 off 35 balls, while Gill led from the front with his aggressive 85. However, after both batters got out, Gujarat struggled to maintain the required run-rate and eventually finished on 218/4.
Sunil Narine was the standout bowler for KKR with figures of 2/29 and was named Player of the Match.
