ENG vs AFG Highlights, ODI World Cup 2023: Afghanistan Upset Defending Champions England To Stay Alive In ODI World Cup 2023

"I want to say that the belief, trust and talent is there. Last couple of games we didn’t finish well but the belief is there. This is just the first win, we are looking for more in the tournament. This was just the first one, not the last one."

- Hashmatullah Shahidi, Afghanistan captain

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 215-10 (40.3)

Afghanistan have done it on the grandest stage!

Rashid Khan dismisses Mark Wood! A flatter delivery on middle, Wood attempts a big swipe across the line, misses, and the stumps are shattered. Afghanistan players are going bersek on the field. This is the moment for them!

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 198-9 (38.4)

Rashid Khan gets Adil Rashid, caught by Nabi. Afghanistan on the brink of a historic win! The ball gripped and turned, catching the outside edge, and Nabi at slip took the catch. Rashid celebrates, and Afghanistan is just one wickets away from victory with Topley and Wood remaining.

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 182-8 (36)

Mujeeb Gets the set batter Harry Brook. Brook attempts a casual shot, but it results in an outside edge. Keeper Ikram Alikhil makes no mistake in catching it. Mujeeb takes his third wicket, and it's a crucial one!

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 166-7 (33.3)

Another down for the defending champions! It all looks gloomy for England as Mujeeb bowls out Woakes. A flighted delivery, a deceptive wrong 'un, and Woakes plays the wrong line. The ball spins past the inside edge, smashing into the off-stump. Afghanistan celebrates!

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 139-6 (27.3)

Mohammad Nabi gets out Sam Curran for 10. Classic offspinner's dismissal. Tossed up delivery, drifts in and dips, Sam Curran half-forward, gets an outside edge, Rahmat takes the catch at first slip.

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 119-5 (21.2)

Afghanistan on top, Rashid gets his first of the match. Livingstone reviews but it's plumb. Livingstone misses the flick, ball strikes the pad, and it's hitting the stumps. Livingstone out for 10.

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 97-4 (17.4)

England lose another, skipper goes for nine. Naveen-ul-Haq knocks over Buttler with a brilliant delivery. Buttler goes for an expansive drive, but the ball nips in, sneaking through the gap between bat and pad to crash into the stumps. Afghanistan in control!

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 69-3 (13)

The set batter goes, England in trouble. Nabi dismisses Malan for 32. The experienced bowler delivers a well-flighted ball that deceives Malan. Malan attempted a drive but mistimed it, gifting a catch to Zadran at covers.

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 33-2 (7)

Joe Root goes. Mujeeb strikes big for Afghanistan, removing England's top batter, Root. The delivery stayed low, and Root, who should have played forward, went back and missed, getting bowled. Afghanistan takes two crucial wickets in the powerplay. Root departs for 11.

AFG: 284-10 (49.5)
ENG: 3-1 (1.1)

Jonny Bairstow goes for two, England lose their first. Fazalhaq Farooqi strikes first ball, Bairstow given OUT LBW, reviewed, close call, but umpire's decision stays.

Joe Root the new man on crease.

Afghanistan finish on 284 for 10 at the end of 49.5 overs.

With just 5 overs left, Ikram needs to take up the mantle here for Aghanistan. After the fall of Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman also need to play some shots as he is very much capable.

That is a thunderbolt from Mark Wood! A bouncer at 147 KMPH and Mohammed Nabi didn't move an inch as it took an edge and point fielder took an easy catch. AFG 194/6 (36.2)

Joe Root gets the captain Hashmatullah Shahidi. This is an excellent strategy in play by England captain Jos Buttler. Afghanistan lose half their side. AFG 174/5 (32.1)

Afghanistan have somewhat lost their way after a brilliant start. Spinners Adil Rashid, Liam Livingstone and Joe Root have been brilliant for England

Wicket! Woakes makes no mistake as Livingstone strikes to get his first wicket of the game. Azmatullah departs for 19 as Afghanistan go four down.

Wicket! Back-to-back wickets for Rashid as he takes two in the over. And all of a sudden Afghanistan have lost three quick wickets here. First Rahmat Shah was stumped out and then the run out that saw the end of a brilliant innings from Gurbaz.

Wicket! England finally get their first wicket as Rashid removes Zadran who tried to play it over mid-wicket but managed to find Root who made no mistake.

Fifty! This has been an inspiring innnings from Gurbaz so far as he reaches his half-century. It looks like that the openers have come out with an intent here as they keep dealing in boundaries at the moment. Seven came off that over.

Curran lost his rhythm in the second over and bowled a no ball as well. Gurbaz grabbed the opportunity with both hands as the Afghan duo picked 20 runs off the over. Massive over.

AFG: 51-0 (7)

Zadran and Gurbaz have provided a strong start for Afghanistan, forging a 50-run partnership in just under seven overs. England makes their initial bowling change of the match, bringing in Sam Curran to disrupt the opening partnership.

AFG: 7-0 (2)

Afghanistan openers, Ibrahim Zadran and Rahmanullah Gurbaz are on the crease at the moment. Afghanistan will love to get off to a good start on a nice sunny day here at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi.

We wanted to bowl first, but this is a 100-over game, we'll have to bat well. Looks like a batting pitch, expecting the same conditions like the last game. Hopeful of doing well and putting pressure on them. We've good spin options and anything around 300 should be a good score. One change, Najib is not playing, Ikram replaces him.

We will bowl first. No particular reason, looks like a good wicket and we'll like to chase. We are going with an unchanged side. Looks like a good batting strip, South Africa and India posted big scores. I think we've improved a lot from the first to the second game, we just have to show the same intensity.

England won the toss and elected to bowl first. No Ben Stokes even today in England's side.

Afghanistan's bowling attack has also struggled in both matches, and they anticipate improved performances from bowlers such as Fazalhaq Farooqi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, Naveen-ul-Haq, and Rashid Khan to compete against formidable teams like England, New Zealand, and Australia.

However, Afghanistan faces issues in all facets of their game. Their opening batsmen have faltered in both matches, affecting the team's overall performance. Captain Hashmatullah Shahidi and Azmatullah Omarzai contributed valuable half-centuries against India, but Afghanistan's openers must step up.

In addition to securing a win, England has its sights set on a convincing victory to enhance their net run rate, which suffered in their tournament opener.

England's decision to replace Moeen Ali with Reece Topley in the bowling attack proved successful, as Topley recorded an impressive performance, securing four wickets for just 43 runs. The rest of the bowling unit, including Chris Woakes, Mark Wood, Sam Curran, and Adil Rashid, also regained their form, combining economy with wicket-taking ability. England aims to replicate this strong performance in their upcoming match.

Dawid Malan delivered an outstanding innings, amassing 140 runs from 107 balls, while Joe Root continued his impressive form with consecutive half-centuries. Given the history of high-scoring matches at the smaller Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, England's openers and middle-order batsmen are optimistic about another strong batting performance.

In their initial encounter, England's bowlers struggled against New Zealand's batting duo of Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra, but they showcased their prowess in the match against Bangladesh.

England's World Cup campaign began on a sour note with a nine-wicket loss to New Zealand, but they quickly recovered with a commanding 137-run victory over Bangladesh.

Hello and welcome to the live cricket coverage of match 13 of the ongoing World Cup 2023 between England and Afghanistan here at the Arun Jaitley stadium in Delhi.
