Mumbai Indians have appointed Luke Williams as their new head coach ahead of the 2027 Women’s Premier League season.

The franchise announced the change on Thursday after Lisa Keightley decided to step down from the position. Keightley had taken charge of the team in September 2025.

“Mumbai Indians have announced that Lisa Keightley has decided to move on from her role as head coach of Mumbai Indians, with Luke Williams appointed as her successor ahead of the 2027 Women’s Premier League season,” the franchise said in a statement.

Keightley Leaves After One Season

Keightley’s stint at Mumbai Indians lasted just one WPL season. Under the former Australia batter, the team finished fourth in the five-team competition.

It was Mumbai Indians’ lowest finish in the tournament so far. The franchise had lifted the WPL title in 2023 and 2025, while reaching the Eliminator in 2024.

Williams will now take charge as Mumbai look to return to the top of the competition.

“We have a great opportunity to build something together, play an exciting brand of cricket and compete for success,” said Williams.

Williams Comes In With WPL Title Experience

Williams is no stranger to the WPL, having guided Royal Challengers Bengaluru to their maiden title in 2025.

The Australian coach has also worked with Southern Brave Women in The Hundred and Adelaide Strikers Women in the Women’s Big Bash League. He was also part of the Adelaide Strikers men’s setup as an assistant coach in the BBL.

“Luke is a proven winner and brings with him rich experience, a deep understanding of the women’s game, and a strong commitment to developing players,” said team owner Nita Ambani.

Williams Has Worked With Charlotte Edwards

Williams has also been part of England’s coaching staff, where he worked alongside former Mumbai Indians head coach Charlotte Edwards.

He is a three-time winner of the Bradman Medal for grade cricket, having received the award in the 2005-06, 2007-08 and 2009-10 seasons.

With Williams now taking over, Mumbai Indians will hope his previous WPL success can help them mount another title challenge in the 2027 season
