South African batter Matthew Breetzke on Monday rewrote the history books as he became the first player in the world to score 150 on a ODI debut. 

Breetzke scripted this historic feat on his ODI debut in the second match of the ongoing ODI tri-series against New Zealand in the second ODI of the Tri-series in Pakistan at the iconic Gaddafi Stadium on Monday.

Breetzke took on the opening role for the Proteas. During his impressive 148-ball innings at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, Breetzke scored a remarkable 150 runs, smashing 11 fours and five sixes in the process.

Before Breetzke's impressive debut, the record for most runs on ODI debut was held by West Indies' Desmond Haynes. Haynes made a remarkable debut against Australia in St. John's on February 22, 1978, scoring 148 runs from 136 balls, with 16 fours and 2 sixes. Breetzke has now surpassed this long-standing record with his own debut century.

Earlier, Colin Ingram made history for South Africa in 2010 by becoming the first player from the country to score a century on ODI debut, achieving this feat against Zimbabwe. However, the distinction of being the first player to score a century not only on ODI debut but also in the shorter format of the game belongs to Dennis Amiss, who accomplished this milestone against Australia in 1972.

Two other notable South African players have also achieved centuries on their ODI debut. The current ODI captain Temba Bavuma scored 113 runs from 123 balls in his first 50-over match against Ireland in Benoni on September 25, 2016.
