Glenn Phillips produced a brillaint batting performance to help New Zealand post 225/4 in the first T20I against India at Hagley Oval in Christchurch on Thursday, October 22. The right-handed batter smashed 82 off just 40 balls, putting the hosts in a commanding position and leaving India with a challenging target in the series opener.
India captain Shreyas Iyer had won the toss and opted to bowl first, hoping to exploit the conditions in Christchurch. However, New Zealand’s batters counterattacked through the innings, with Phillips leading the charge and ensuring the hosts finished with a formidable total.
Glenn Phillips Leads New Zealand’s Batting Charge
Phillips’ innings proved crucial after New Zealand made an aggressive start. Finn Allen scored 45 off 24 balls, while Tim Seifert contributed 24 from 17 deliveries to give the hosts early momentum. Their attacking approach put pressure on the Indian bowlers during the powerplay.
Phillips then took charge in the middle overs, combining clean hitting with an impressive scoring rate. His 82 came at a strike rate of 205, helping New Zealand maintain their attacking intent even as India looked for breakthroughs.
Daryl Mitchell also made a useful contribution with 28 off 19 balls before Bevon Jacobs was run out. Phillips’ assault ensured that the home side continued to score quickly and crossed the 200-run mark in the closing stages.
Michael Bracewell remained unbeaten on seven as New Zealand finished their 20 overs at 225/4.
India’s Bowlers Face A Tough Challenge
India’s decision to bowl first did not produce the control they would have wanted. Bhuvneshwar Kumar, making his international comeback after nearly four years, conceded 49 runs in his four overs without taking a wicket. Nitish Kumar Reddy also went for 40 runs in his given four overs.
