Former India leg-spinner Amit Mishra has joined Delhi Capitals (DC) as their spin-bowling coach ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season. Notably, Amit started his IPL career with the same franchise back in 2008.

Amit Mishra has already retired from all forms of cricket in September 2025 and this will be the first time he will be seen coaching a IPL franchise for the first time.

The former spinner expressed his happiness at returning to Delhi Capitals and said he hopes to help the franchise bring joy to its fans, who are still waiting for their first IPL title.

‘Dilli Is My Heartbeat’: Amit Mishra On Delhi Capitals Return

Speaking in a video shared by Delhi Capitals on social media on Wednesday, Mishra recalled his association with the franchise and said he was happy to start his coaching career with the same team where his IPL journey began.

He also spoke about his determination to help the franchise deliver the results its supporters have been waiting for.

Delhi Capitals finished sixth in the IPL 2026 standings and are yet to lift the trophy. The franchise will hope Mishra’s experience and knowledge of spin bowling can help strengthen the team ahead of the next season.

Amit Mishra Holds Unique IPL Record

Mishra made an immediate impact in the inaugural IPL season in 2008, taking a five-wicket haul in his first match. That performance also included the first of his three hat-tricks in the tournament.

He went on to take two more hat-tricks in 2011 and 2013. No other bowler has taken more hat-tricks than Mishra in IPL history.

Known for his flighted deliveries and deceptive leg-breaks, Mishra played in the IPL from 2008 to 2024, missing only the 2022 season. During his career, he represented Delhi Capitals, formerly known as Delhi Daredevils, Deccan Chargers, Sunrisers Hyderabad and Lucknow Super Giants.

His final IPL appearance came for Lucknow Super Giants in 2024. He finished his IPL career with 174 wickets in 162 matches at an economy rate of 7.37.

Mishra also represented India across all three formats between 2003 and 2017. He played 22 Tests, 36 ODIs and 10 T20Is for the national team.

Delhi Capitals Make Changes To Support Staff And Squad

Mishra’s appointment comes as Delhi Capitals continue to make changes to their coaching staff and playing squad ahead of IPL 2027.

The franchise’s support staff restructuring follows an arrangement reached between co-owners GMR Sports India Pvt Ltd and JSW Sports after IPL 2024. Under the agreement, the two groups manage the team’s cricket operations in alternating two-year cycles.

Former India captain Sourav Ganguly has also taken over as Delhi Capitals’ head coach.

The franchise has been active in the trade window, sending left-arm fast bowler T Natarajan to Sunrisers Hyderabad and bringing in leg-spinner Zeeshan Ansari.

Delhi Capitals have also traded wrist-spinner Kuldeep Yadav to Lucknow Super Giants and brought back Rishabh Pant in the deal.
