Former Pakistan speedster Mohammad Amir has decided not to register for the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 auction, putting an end to speculation about a possible entry into the cash-rich league.
Amir, who acquired British citizenship in May 2026, was expected to be eligible for the IPL auction as a UK national. His change in citizenship had opened up the possibility of him becoming one of the few former Pakistan internationals to feature in the tournament.
However, the left-arm pacer has no immediate plans to play in the IPL. According to a report by Cricbuzz, Amir has confirmed that he will not register for the upcoming auction.
The 34-year-old made his decision clear in a message to the publication from Dubai.
Amir has continued to play franchise cricket since retiring from international cricket in 2024. While he remains interested in T20 leagues around the world, an IPL stint is not part of his immediate plans.
Why Mohammad Amir’s IPL Entry Was Being Discussed
The possibility of Amir playing in the IPL came into focus after he registered for the Afghanistan Premier League (APL) draft as a UK national.
He has been placed in the Platinum category, with Pakistan listed as his country of residence. His British citizenship had raised hopes of seeing him in the IPL, where Pakistani players have not been part of the auction pool since the inaugural seasons.
However, his decision not to register for the 2027 auction means fans will have to wait longer to see whether he ever gets an opportunity to play in the Indian league.
Mohammad Amir’s New Chapter In Franchise Cricket After British Citizenship
Amir acquired British citizenship in May 2026 and has since continued to explore opportunities in overseas franchise cricket.
He has already featured in England’s domestic T20 competitions, representing Nottinghamshire’s Notts Outlaws in the T20 Blast and Trent Rockets in The Hundred. His British passport allowed him to play as a domestic player rather than occupy an overseas slot in these competitions.
His registration for the Afghanistan Premier League draft as a UK national is another example of how the change in citizenship could expand his options in franchise cricket.
Amir has also confirmed his return to the Pakistan Super League (PSL) in 2027. However, he is expected to feature as an overseas player following his change in citizenship.
Mohammad Amir’s International Career For Pakistan
Amir called time on his international career in 2024 after representing Pakistan in all three formats. He played 36 Tests, 61 ODIs and 62 T20Is for his country.
The left-arm pacer was part of Pakistan’s squad that won the 2009 T20 World Cup. He also played a crucial role in the team’s Champions Trophy triumph in 2017, particularly with his outstanding performance in the final against India.
His British citizenship also brought back memories of former Pakistan all-rounder Azhar Mahmood, who played in the IPL between 2012 and 2015.
Mahmood represented Kings XI Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders after acquiring a British passport. He was able to participate in the league as an overseas player.
