Former India head coach Ravi Shastri believes teenage batting star Vaibhav Sooryavanshi is ready for international cricket and should get an India call-up as soon as possible.
The 15-year-old has become one of the biggest talking points in Indian cricket after his fearless batting performances in white-ball cricket over the last two years. He has already scored two centuries in the IPL and has taken apart some of the best bowlers in the tournament.
Why Sooryavanshi should get an India call-up as soon as possible?
Even though many people feel he should play more domestic cricket before making his India debut, Shastri feels there is no reason to wait any longer.
“A lot of people will ask, is he 15, is he 16, is he 14? I don't care. I just see the way he is batting at the moment and the way he's taking on all comers twice his age or maybe two and a half times his age. It doesn't matter to him," Shastri said while speaking to Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review.
Shastri added that India should seriously consider picking Sooryavanshi for the upcoming Ireland tour.
“So I think he's very, very much in the reckoning. And when you have tours of Ireland [in June for 2 T20Is] and all this happening now, I would be looking into him straight away.
“I can tell you that, for sure, because if you want to encourage or get someone young and into the setup as quickly as possible, then it's the T20 format of the game, and he is not short by any margin.
“This guy can walk into a lot of sides in world cricket at this current moment in time. Just when you look at the exuberance of youth, that youth shows on his face."
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's recent form
Sooryavanshi was recently selected in the India A squad for the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka, which will also feature Afghanistan. The tournament is scheduled to take place from June 9 to June 21.
After that, the senior Indian team will travel to Ireland for a two-match T20I series before heading to England for five T20Is and three ODIs.
