Ravindra Jadeja has grabbed attention on social media after replying to the BCCI’s post inviting applications for a vacant position on the men’s senior selection committee.
The India all-rounder reacted to the board’s post on X with a short question about the application process. His reply quickly went viral, with several fans wondering if there was more to it, especially after former chief selector Ajit Agarkar stepped down from the role.
The all-rounder is not particularly active on X. Before this, his last reply on the platform came in February, when he responded to former India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Did Jadeja Take A Dig At Agarkar?
Jadeja and Agarkar have never had a public disagreement. However, Agarkar led the selection committee during a key period of change in Indian cricket.
Following India’s disappointing campaign at the 2022 T20 World Cup, Agarkar and the selectors wanted to move towards a younger T20I side. The plan was aimed at giving the team a fresh look and building a new generation of players.
That transition was briefly delayed when Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jadeja returned to the T20I squad ahead of the 2024 T20 World Cup.
India eventually won the tournament, but all three senior players announced their T20I retirements immediately after the title triumph. Their exits allowed India to move ahead with the transition towards a younger side.
Jadeja Was Left Out Of ODI Squads
During Agarkar’s tenure, Jadeja was also left out of India’s ODI squads for the Sri Lanka series in 2024 and the Australia series in 2025.
However, Agarkar had made it clear that Jadeja continued to remain an important part of India’s ODI plans.
Jadeja himself had previously admitted that selection decisions were not in his hands while speaking about his exclusion.
Agarkar Steps Down As Chief Selector
Agarkar’s stint as chairman of the selection committee came to an end on October 4 after he decided not to seek an extension.
The BCCI has now opened applications for one position on the five-member senior men’s selection panel. Interested candidates have until October 14 to submit their applications.
For the time being, former India spinner Pragyan Ojha has taken over as interim chairman. Shiv Sunder Das, Ajay Ratra and RP Singh continue to be part of the panel.
The BCCI’s next appointment could therefore be significant, as the new member could eventually become the permanent chairman of the selection committee.
What Is The Eligibility Criteria?
The BCCI has set out specific requirements for candidates applying for the position.
An applicant must have played at least seven Tests, 30 first-class matches, or 10 ODIs and 20 first-class matches during their playing career.
Candidates must also have retired from all forms of cricket at least five years ago. Anyone who has been part of a BCCI Cricket Committee for a combined period of five years will not be eligible for the position.
What Does A National Selector Do?
The job involves much more than simply picking India’s squads. The selected candidate will be expected to keep track of players across domestic and international cricket, identify emerging talent and help build India’s bench strength.
Selectors also attend team meetings, assess player performances and travel to matches when required. The new member will therefore have a key role in shaping the future of Indian cricket.
