India Test great Ajinkya Rahane has announced his retirement from cricket, bringing an end to a career that spanned more than a decade. Although his statement focused on retirement from the game as a whole rather than only international cricket, it also means fans are unlikely to see him in IPL 2027.
Rahane had been leading Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in two seasons after taking over the captaincy following Shreyas Iyer’s exit. With his retirement now confirmed, the franchise will have to appoint a new skipper ahead of the next IPL season.

While Rahane had been away from India’s Test side for the last few years, he remained an important figure for KKR because of his experience and leadership. However, Kolkata could not match the success they enjoyed under Shreyas Iyer, who guided the team to the IPL 2024 title. The franchise will now begin the search for its next leader.
Here are some players who could take charge of KKR in IPL 2027.
Rinku Singh
Rinku Singh appears to be the frontrunner for the role. He served as Rahane’s vice-captain, making him a natural choice if KKR decide to promote from within. Having already been part of the leadership group, Rinku understands the team’s environment and could provide continuity.

Varun Chakravarthy
Varun Chakravarthy has been one of KKR’s most consistent performers over the years. His experience, calm mindset and importance to the bowling attack make him another strong contender. If the franchise wants to reward a long-serving player, Varun could be in the frame.
Sunil Narine
Sunil Narine is another experienced option. The veteran all-rounder has spent most of his IPL career with KKR and knows the franchise inside out. He has also handled on-field responsibilities in the past, including stepping in to guide field placements and bowling changes when Rahane briefly left the field during a match in 2025. His vast experience could make him a reliable short-term captain.
Hardik Pandya
Hardik Pandya could become a surprise option if reports of a possible move away from Mumbai Indians materialise. A trade would not be easy, but if KKR manage to secure his services, they would get one of the league’s most successful captains. Hardik led Gujarat Titans to the IPL title in 2022 and another final in 2023, proving his ability to lead a team under pressure.
Suryakumar Yadav
Suryakumar Yadav is another name that has been linked with a potential move from Mumbai Indians. He has happy memories with KKR from his earlier stint and has since grown into one of the world’s best T20 batters. As India’s current T20I captain, he would bring both leadership experience and star power if Kolkata can bring him back.
KL Rahul
KL Rahul is also among the possible candidates. His strong relationship with KKR mentor Abhishek Nayar could work in his favour if the franchise looks outside its current squad. Rahul has previously captained Punjab Kings and Lucknow Super Giants before representing Delhi Capitals. His leadership experience, batting quality and wicketkeeping skills make him a well-rounded option for the role.
