Ahead of the Indian men's selection committee meeting in Mumbai on Saturday, Shreyas Iyer was reportedly asked to be present at the BCCI headquarters for discussions. The move has further strengthened reports that Iyer is set to become India's new T20I captain and could begin his tenure with the upcoming tour of the UK later this month.

According to The Indian Express, the BCCI has approved Iyer's appointment as T20I captain, with an official announcement expected later in the day.

“Iyer will be formally declared as captain on Saturday, and he will be leading the Indian T20I team in Ireland and England. The selection committee had sent their new captain’s name to the decision makers in the Indian board, and they have approved Iyer as the new skipper," a BCCI source was quoted by IndianExpress

Selectors Set To Move On From Suryakumar

Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to the ICC T20 World Cup title, is reportedly set to lose both the captaincy and his place in the squad. Reports suggest that the selection panel led by Ajit Agarkar has decided not to consider him going forward and has already conveyed this to the batter.

His extended run of poor form is believed to have played a key role in the selectors' decision. The panel reportedly waited until the end of IPL 2026 before making a final call.

Iyer Likely To Lead India In Ireland

Iyer last played a T20I for India in December 2023. Although he was part of the squad for the home T20I series against New Zealand earlier this year, he did not get a chance to play.

The Mumbai batter has impressed with both his performances and leadership in recent years. He captained Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in 2024 and later led Punjab Kings to the final in 2025 after joining the franchise.

India are scheduled to play two T20Is in Ireland later this month before travelling to England for a five-match T20I series.
