Shreyas Iyer added his name to India’s T20I record books on Tuesday (October 6), becoming only the third Indian captain to score a century in the format.
Iyer reached his hundred in just 42 balls during the first T20I against the West Indies in Lucknow. Coming in at No. 3 during India’s 172-run chase, the right-hander stayed unbeaten on 102 off 43 balls as India comfortably chased down the target.
Iyer’s knock included 10 fours and six sixes. He also shared a match-winning 137-run partnership with Ishan Kishan for the third wicket. Kishan finished unbeaten on 37 off 27 balls.
Before Iyer, Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav had achieved the same feat as India captains. Rohit scored three T20I centuries while leading the team, while Suryakumar registered one.
Rohit, however, still holds the record for the fastest T20I century by an Indian captain. He smashed a 35-ball hundred against Sri Lanka in Indore on December 22, 2017.
India beat West Indies by 8 wickets in 1st T20I
Shreyas Iyer led the way with an unbeaten 102 as India began their five-match T20I series against West Indies with a comfortable eight-wicket win.
After being asked to bat first, West Indies were bowled out for 171. India made light work of the chase, reaching the target in just 14.4 overs to go 1-0 up in the series.
Naman Dhir made an impressive debut with the ball, picking up three wickets for 31 runs. Arshdeep Singh took one wicket, while Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav claimed two each.
West Indies had looked set for a bigger total when Shai Hope scored 52 and Sherfane Rutherford made 56. The pair put on 63 runs from 35 balls before India hit back with four quick wickets.
Rutherford then found support from Akeal Hosein, who scored 15, as the visitors pushed the total to 171 before being bowled out.
India, however, were never under serious pressure in the chase. Iyer took control of the innings and finished unbeaten on 102, helping the hosts wrap up the game with plenty of overs to spare.
