Suryakumar Yadav will not feature in Mumbai’s squad for their opening Ranji Trophy match despite making himself available for the entire season.

The 2026 T20 World Cup-winning captain has been left out as the Mumbai selectors look to give opportunities to younger players. Suryakumar lost his place in the national team soon after India’s T20 World Cup triumph and currently does not appear to be part of the selectors’ plans.

Mumbai chief selector Rajesh Pawar said the committee preferred to back youngsters but also kept the door open for the experienced batter.

Pawar advised Suryakumar to play more red-ball cricket if he wants to push his case for a return. The 36-year-old last played a First-Class match in February 2025, when Mumbai faced Vidarbha in Nagpur.

Jaiswal Included in Mumbai Squad

India opener Yashasvi Jaiswal, meanwhile, has been included in Mumbai’s 16-member squad for the opening game of the Ranji Trophy season.

Jaiswal is understood to have made himself available for only a limited period. His selection comes amid reports that the BCCI has asked players to get enough red-ball cricket under their belt ahead of India’s Test tour of New Zealand.

Jaiswal will be part of Mumbai’s squad for their clash against Chandigarh, which will be played from October 11 to 15. The match is expected to take place at the Wankhede Stadium.

Ayush Mhatre Named Vice-Captain

Young batter Ayush Mhatre has been named Mumbai’s vice-captain. Mhatre had led India to the Under-19 World Cup title earlier this year.

Mumbai, who have won the Ranji Trophy 42 times, have been placed in Elite Group D alongside Haryana, Rajasthan, Railways, Tamil Nadu and Uttarakhand.

Sarfaraz, Mulani Also Included

The squad also includes India batter Sarfaraz Khan, who recently played for Rest of India in their Irani Cup win over Jammu and Kashmir.

All-rounder Shams Mulani has also been included after playing a key role in India A’s 1-0 win over Australia A in their two-match unofficial Test series.

Former Mumbai captain and India all-rounder Shardul Thakur, however, will miss the opening game as he is currently recovering from an injury.
