West Indies kept their hopes alive in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC) after beating Pakistan by 90 runs in the first Test in Trinidad. The home side successfully defended a target of 211, with fast bowler Jayden Seales leading the charge by taking five wickets in Pakistan’s second innings.
The victory gave West Indies an important boost in the WTC standings. After suffering defeats against Australia, India and New Zealand earlier in the cycle, they bounced back by winning a home series against Sri Lanka. The latest win over Pakistan has taken their points percentage to 22.73, moving them to eighth place.

England currently occupy seventh place with a points percentage of 24.36, meaning West Indies could move closer to them if they continue their winning run.
Pakistan’s campaign, however, has gone from bad to worse. The visitors have managed just one victory in five matches and remain at the bottom of the WTC table with a points percentage of only 6.67. Their latest defeat was also their fourth in a row, following a disappointing series against Bangladesh.

WI vs PAK 1st Test
Chasing 211 for victory, Pakistan never looked in control. They were reduced to 71 for nine before Babar Azam and Mohammad Abbas added a fighting 49-run partnership for the final wicket. The stand delayed the inevitable, but Jayden Seales eventually ended the resistance to hand West Indies a memorable 90-run win.
The result has also put West Indies in a strong position to claim their first home Test series victory over Pakistan in 25 years. The last time the Caribbean side defeated Pakistan in a home Test series was in 2000, when they won the three-match contest 1-0.
When the two teams last met in the West Indies in 2021, the two-match series finished level at 1-1. This time, the hosts have already taken a 1-0 lead and now have the chance to wrap up the series when the second and final Test begins on August 2.
