Delhi is poised for a significant infrastructure upgrade with the launch of several key projects aimed at strengthening public facilities, cleaning the Yamuna River, and easing traffic congestion. These initiatives, valued at over Rs 3,000 crore, will be unveiled during the 'SewaPakhwada' (service fortnight), which runs from September 17, the Prime Minister's birthday, to October 2, Gandhi Jayanti.

Major Push For Yamuna Cleaning And Water Supply

A central focus of the initiative is the rejuvenation of the Yamuna and the enhancement of Delhi's water and sewage infrastructure. The highlight will be the inauguration of what is being billed as Asia's largest Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) in Okhla.

The new Okhla STP, developed at a cost of Rs 665.78 crore, has the capacity to treat 564 million litres per day (MLD) of sewage. The project, funded 85 per cent by the central government under the NamamiGange programme and 15 per cent by the Delhi government, replaces four outdated STPs built before 1993. Although its construction was scheduled for completion in 2022, it is being inaugurated after a delay of nearly three years.

According to Delhi's PWD and Water Minister, Pravesh Verma, the Okhla plant is part of 13 major projects by the Delhi Jal Board. Other key water-related projects to be launched include:

- A new sewer network in the Sonia Vihar area.

- A Master Balancing Reservoir (MBR) in Palla to improve water supply.

- A new underground reservoir in Bijwasan.

- The construction and upgradation of several other STPs across the city.

New Drainage Master Plan To Tackle Flooding

During the Sewa Pakhwada, the government will also announce the long-awaited Delhi Drainage Master Plan. This crucial plan, aimed at tackling the capital's chronic problems of waterlogging and flooding, will replace the previous master plan created in 1976. It will also include new provisions to protect the city from floods in the Yamuna River.

Easing Traffic Congestion

To address traffic issues, the completed Nand Nagri flyover in North-East Delhi will be inaugurated, providing much-needed relief from congestion in the area. Additionally, the foundation stone will be laid for a new foot-over-bridge at Rajputana Rifles to improve pedestrian safety and convenience.
