Delhi News: Delhi is set to simplify its emergency response system by moving all services to a single helpline number. Under the Emergency Response Support System (ERSS) 2.0, residents will no longer need to remember multiple numbers during a crisis. Any emergency can now be reported by dialling 112.

The move aims to make emergency services faster, more efficient and technology-driven, especially during critical situations.

Why 112 Is Being Adopted

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said the Union Home Ministry has declared 112 as the national emergency number. Delhi will now fully adopt this system in line with national guidelines.

She explained that ERSS 2.0 is a unified platform where all emergency requests will be received and processed from a single control centre.

How ERSS 2.0 works

Under the new system, all alerts will be handled at one Public Safety Answering Point (PSAP).

Emergency requests can be sent through:

  • Voice calls to 112

  • Mobile applications

  • Panic buttons

  • SMS and web-based alerts

Even if a person is unable to speak during an emergency, help can still be requested through non-verbal options.

Faster Help Through Automatic Location Tracking

According to Delhi government officials, a key feature of ERSS 2.0 is automatic location detection. As soon as an alert is received, the system identifies the caller’s location without requiring them to explain it.

This allows the control room to immediately send the nearest police vehicle, ambulance, fire engine, or disaster response team. Officials said this will help save crucial time during the golden hour and reduce delays.

Monitoring And Accountability

The control centre will use a real-time digital dashboard showing:

  • Incident location

  • Type of emergency

  • Vehicle dispatched

  • Estimated arrival time

If there is any delay, additional resources can be sent instantly. The system will be rolled out in phases, starting with merging all existing emergency numbers into 112.

Currently, Delhi uses several helpline numbers for different services, including police, fire, ambulance, women and child safety, utilities, and disaster relief. This often leads to confusion and delays.

With ERSS 2.0, all emergency assistance in Delhi will be available through a single call to 112, making help quicker and easier to access.
