A fresh political controversy has erupted on the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus following a protest organised by left-wing groups. The Delhi unit of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) has strongly condemned the demonstration, alleging that the participants displayed an "anti-national mentality" and used language intended to incite violence.

Trigger: Supreme Court Bail Rejection

According to the ABVP, the protest was organised in response to the Supreme Court's recent rejection of the bail pleas filed by Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam. The student organisation alleged that instead of respecting the judicial decision, left-wing groups resorted to aggressive sloganeering.

Allegations Of Objectionable Slogans

The ABVP claims that during the protest, objectionable slogans were raised against the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), and the ABVP itself. They described the protest as an affront to the university's academic dignity.

The organisation further stated that this is not an isolated incident but a continuation of the same ideology prevalent since 2016, which they accuse of questioning the nation's unity and integrity.

ABVP’s Stance On Judiciary And Dissent

Clarifying its position, the ABVP asserted that the Supreme Court's decision is the result of an independent and fair judicial process that cannot be influenced by pressure tactics or street protests. The organizsation noted that while the right to dissent exists in a democracy, spreading violence and hatred under the guise of dissent is unacceptable.

Demand For Action

Sarthak Sharma, the State Secretary (Pradesh Mantri) of ABVP, stated that "anti-national activities" on the JNU campus will not be tolerated at any cost.

The ABVP has demanded that the university administration:

  • Identify the culprits responsible for the slogans.
  • Take strict and swift action against them.
  • Ensure that peace and a proper academic atmosphere are maintained on campus.
