The 2025 Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections saw a tough contest, resulting in a split verdict. The Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) secured a dominant victory by winning three key posts—President, Secretary, and Joint Secretary. However, the National Students' Union of India (NSUI) claimed the crucial post of Vice President in a significant win.

Who Is Rahul Jhansla? NSUI's Key Victory 

In a result seen as a major relief for the party, NSUI's Rahul Jhansla was elected Vice President. The 24-year-old postgraduate in Buddhist Studies from Rajasthan defeated ABVP candidate Govind Tanwar, securing 29,339 votes to Tanwar's 20,547.

According to Hindustan Times, Jhansla, a graduate of Shaheed Bhagat Singh College who also holds a Bachelor of Law (LLB) degree from the university, is known for his persistent focus on student rights. His victory is being attributed to a grassroots campaign built on a proven track record of activism. Over the past two years, he has been at the forefront of numerous hunger strikes and protests that successfully highlighted critical campus issues such as poor hostel hygiene and inadequate sports infrastructure. This history of activism earned him strong support from the Purvanchal and Rajasthan student communities.

According to his official website, Jhansla’s vision is to create "a university ecosystem where every student’s voice matters and youth participation leads to real political change."

A Mandate For "Change"

Student politics experts view Jhansla's win as a significant indicator that students are now prioritising leaders who address their genuine day-to-day concerns. This aligns with the NSUI's broader election campaign, which was centered on the theme of "change." The party highlighted long-standing issues such as dilapidated infrastructure, an unsafe campus, the demand for menstrual leave, and opposition to the appointment of allegedly unqualified RSS-backed teachers.

While the results reflect the continued strength of the ABVP on campus, the NSUI's victory for the Vice President post signals a renewed hope for the organisation and makes it clear that students at Delhi University are demanding concrete steps towards change.
