Assam Educational Crisis: Assam’s educational system is facing twin challenges: shrinking student enrolment and a large number of vacant teaching positions. As per the data shared by the Assam Education Minister, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, thousands of schools are grappling with teacher shortages, and many have continued to function without adequate student enrollment. Additionally, around 25,000 educational institutions have applied for provincialisation, which has further added to the problem. This situation is alarming and has raised concerns about the state education system.
Shortage In Student Enrollment
One of the most alarming data presented by Dr Pegu is that 32,321 schools in Assam currently function with fewer than 30 students. Lower student enrollment has become a growing concern considering the declining birth rate and the mobilization of people. With few student enrollments, schools fail to justify their structural investment and have problems maintaining their long-term sustainability.
60,032 Teacher Posts Remain Vacant Across Assam
Official data presented in the House showed that 60,032 teaching positions are currently vacant across various levels of schooling in Assam. The shortage of teachers has forced schools to function with limited staff, increasing the workload of teachers and giving less attention to individual students. This will eventually hamper students’ educational ecosystem.
Provincialisation Adding To The Crisis
Adding to the challenge, nearly 25,000 educational institutions have applied for provincialisation after the online portal was opened. Through provincialisation, schools and teachers are brought under the government administration and funding. Based on the data presented in the House, 6,163 lower primary schools, 10,101 upper primary schools, 5,733 high schools, and 1,222 senior secondary schools have filled in the applications. These are processed under the Assam Education provisions and other related rules.
What Steps Are Being Taken?
Addressing the crisis, the Education Minister has informed the Assembly that the government is taking appropriate measures to redeem the educational system of the state. Furthermore, he added that teacher and principal recruitment is in process as per the court directives and state recruitment policies.
