Delhi School Holiday:  As New Delhi is preparing to host the most anticipated 18th BRICS Leaders’ Summit on September 12 and 13 at Bharat Mandapam, the Delhi LG has issued an official notice declaring September 11 as a government holiday. The order applies to all government offices, autonomous bodies, and public sector undertakings (PSUs) under it. The decision comes as the state tightens security measures and traffic preparations to host the eminent international event. However, schools and colleges are not closed on September 11, 2026. For individual school closures, parents and students must check with their respective school authorities.

Order Does Not Include Educational Institutions

The official order does not include banklet closures for educational institutions on September 11, 2026. However, due to traffic restrictions or other arrangements, individual schools may declare a school closure for that day. Students and parents are requested to check with their respective school authorities for any confirmation. Likewise, colleges and universities will also remain open on September 11, 2026. It depends on the authorities whether to hold classes or suspend them on that day. Separate notices related to the holiday will be issued to students by colleges and universities through official communication channels.

Three-Day Closures For Government Offices

Ahead of the BRICS summit, authorities have upgraded security measures, traffic arrangements, and logistics. To help reduce inconvenience during the event, the Delhi LG has ordered a school holiday on September 11 for all government offices. September 12 and 13 are Saturday and Sunday, making a long weekend for government employees.

Security Tightened For The International Event

The 18th BRICS Summit will be held on September 12 and 13 at the Bharat Mandapam at Pragati Maidan. To ease the traffic during the event, the Delhi Police has identified 22 diversion points for more than 35 roads where traffic had to be managed for the motorcade movement. Commuters have been advised to use the metro wherever possible and plan their journey effectively.

India Is One of The Founding Members

It is worth noting that India is one of the founding members of BRICS and has previously chaired it in 2012, 2016, and 2021. India assumed the BRICS presidency for the fourth time on January 1, 2026. This year, BRICS is also celebrating its 20th anniversary.
