IGNOU PhD Admissions 2026: The Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) has officially started the application process for its Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) programmes for the July 2026 academic cycle. Eligible and interested candidates can submit their applications online starting from June 10, 2026. The university has activated its dedicated registration portal, allowing research aspirants a window to complete their documentation and lock in their choices before the final closing date on July 1, 2026.
Admissions are being offered across 36 versatile academic disciplines, which include Psychology, Anthropology, Political Science, Public Administration, Biochemistry, and Chemistry, among others. The research courses are structured under full-time and part-time modules, ensuring flexible options for working professionals. Candidates must carefully navigate the registration guidelines, submit an application fee of Rs 2,000, and ensure all academic data matches their official documents.
Admission Categories and Eligibility Framework:
In strict alignment with the University Grants Commission (UGC) Regulations, 2022, IGNOU has outlined four clear categories for prospective doctoral scholars to gain entry into these research programmes:
Category 1: Candidates who have qualified the UGC-NET with Junior Research Fellowship (JRF).
Category 2: UGC-NET qualified candidates are eligible for both Assistant Professor roles and PhD admission.
Category 3: UGC-NET qualified candidates are eligible exclusively for PhD admission.
Category 4: Aspirants seeking admission through the university-level entrance examination.
Interview Requirements and Selection Exemption
A mandatory interview or viva-voce presentation forms an integral part of the final evaluation process for all applicants. However, candidates who possess valid JRF scores or have cleared the national-level UGC-NET exam receive a significant advantage.
They are entirely exempt from appearing for the university's written entrance examination and will be shortlisted directly for the face-to-face interview round based on their national test scores.
Mandatory Course Work and Attendance Criteria
The university has introduced strict rules regarding academic residency and class attendance for newly admitted scholars. All selected candidates, irrespective of their chosen stream, must complete their mandatory initial coursework physically at the main IGNOU Headquarters located in New Delhi.
Additionally, scholars are required to maintain a minimum of 80 per cent classroom attendance during this foundational coursework period to remain eligible for thesis submission.
