India Medical Colleges 2026: The Union Health Ministry has officially announced a massive expansion in India’s medical infrastructure for the upcoming 2025–26 academic session. With the establishment of 43 new medical colleges, the government has cleared 11,682 additional MBBS seats and 8,967 postgraduate (PG) seats to address the growing demand for healthcare professionals.

This data, shared by the National Medical Commission (NMC) in the Rajya Sabha, underscores a decade of unprecedented growth. Since 2014, the number of medical colleges has more than doubled, jumping from 387 to 818, while total MBBS seats have surged from approximately 51,000 to nearly 1.29 lakh.

The transformation of India's medical landscape over the last ten years is significant. MBBS seats have increased by over 150%, while PG seats have seen a similar trajectory, rising from 31,185 to over 85,000. This expansion includes not only private and state-run colleges but also prestigious Institutes of National Importance like AIIMS.

The NMC Approval Process: Digital Inspections and Strict Standards

The Medical Assessment and Rating Board (MARB) under the NMC now utilises a rigorous, technology-driven evaluation process. To secure a Letter of Permission (LoP), institutions must undergo assessments involving Aadhaar-based attendance, Hospital Management Information System (HMIS) data, and surprise physical or video inspections to ensure they meet minimum training standards.

Bridging the Gap: Centrally Sponsored Schemes for Underserved Areas

To tackle regional disparities, the Centre is funding 157 new medical colleges attached to existing district hospitals. With a total budget of Rs 41,332 crore, this initiative specifically targets aspirational districts. The funding follows a 60:40 split with most states, while special category and Northeastern states receive 90 per cent central assistance.

Streamlining Admissions: Timely Seat Matrix and Counselling Updates

The Health Ministry confirmed it is working closely with the NMC to ensure that all seat approvals are finalised well before the commencement of the 2025-26 counselling sessions. This transparency aims to provide aspirants with a clear understanding of available opportunities in both UG and PG courses across the newly approved institutions.
