NEET and JEE Merger: A proposal to introduce a single entrance examination for engineering and medical admissions is currently under consideration by the Centre. As reported by the Economic Times, the new framework will eventually replace JEE and NEET with one unified exam. The one national-level exam will have specialised sections for JEE and NEET aspirants. NEET aspirants will have Biology and Mathematics assigned to engineering candidates.
Amid the ongoing reforms in the education systems, following concerns over exam irregularities, the proposal was put on the table. Several Members of Parliament (MPs) have supported this proposal, viewing it as a streamlined and more efficient admission mechanism. However, officials have clarified that the proposal is still at a discussion stage and no final decision has been made.
Why Is the Proposal Being Discussed?
The recent NEET UG paper-leak allegation and cancellation of the exam have triggered many exam risks and regulations. To reduce such risks in the future, a proposal for a unified entrance test is being considered. During the meeting, NTA Director General Abhishek Singh and Higher Education Secretary Vineet Joshi briefed the parliamentary panel, headed by the senior Congress leader Digvijaya Singh, about the ongoing examination reforms and the recommendations of Dr K. Radhakrishnan Committee.
Further to strengthen the exam security, NTA outlines plans to restrict the question paper setting process. The agency informed the panel that it aims to build its own software and hardware systems and gradually reduce its dependency on external test-delivery agencies.
Govt Reviewing Additional Reforms
According to ET reports, the government is also reviewing additional reforms, such as age limits and restrictions on the number of attempts for medical entrance aspirants, to align NEET with other national competitive examinations. Additionally, authorities are considering the possibility of conducting the unified entrance test in multiple sessions and stages to improve flexibility and reduce pressure on students.
No Official Decision Yet
Despite the discussions, there has been no official confirmation regarding the merger of JEE and NEET. The proposal is still under consideration, and authorities have not announced any timeline for implementation. Students preparing for existing entrance examinations are advised to continue following the current exam pattern and official notifications.
