Odisha School Closure Update: The Odisha government has ordered the closure of government schools and Anganwadi centres across several districts, as the India Meteorological Department warns of heavy to very heavy rainfall over southern and coastal regions. Officials have cancelled employee leaves and deployed emergency teams in vulnerable areas to prepare for possible flooding, landslides and waterlogging.

While Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam and Gajapati have shut schools for the day, Malkangiri's closures will extend until September 25, with Anganwadi centres following the same timeline statewide.

Odisha School Holiday Update: District-Wise Closures

Khurda, Jagatsinghpur, Ganjam and Gajapati have closed schools for the day, while Malkangiri schools stay shut until September 25. Anganwadi centres across affected districts remain closed through the same date. The National Rural Talent Scholarship exam, however, will proceed as scheduled at designated centres.

Staff Deployment and Preparedness

Teachers and school staff in Koraput and Kalahandi have been told not to leave their posting locations until September 25. Roster duties have been introduced so school buildings stay accessible round the clock for emergency use, and employee leave has been cancelled statewide.

IMD Forecast and Alert Levels

The IMD tracked a Bay of Bengal depression roughly 220 km from Gopalpur and 320 km from Visakhapatnam. Chief Secretary Anu Garg placed collectors in 11 areas on high alert. Koraput, Gajapati and Ganjam are expected to see heavy to very heavy rainfall on September 23-24, with isolated pockets facing extremely heavy rain.

A red alert has been extended to Kalahandi, Nabarangpur, Koraput and Malkangiri for September 24-25, with authorities warning of waterlogging, urban flooding, landslides and mudslides in these areas.
