History of World Teachers' Day:
There is a specific reason behind this date. October 5 commemorates the adoption of that recommendation during a special intergovernmental conference convened in 1966 through the collaboration of UNESCO and the International Labour Organization (ILO).
This recommendation established international standards regarding teachers' rights and responsibilities, initial training and further education, recruitment, employment, and teaching-learning conditions. World Teachers' Day has been celebrated since 1994. The ILO adopted a separate recommendation for higher education teaching personnel in 1997.
Theme And Significance For 2026:
UNESCO has announced the theme for 2026: "Standing with Teachers: 60 years of safeguarding the profession, elevating its status, and shaping our future." The aim is not merely to honor teachers but also to assess whether education systems are providing them with the necessary professional and material support to carry out their work.
The event will also feature the ceremony for the ninth UNESCO-Hamdan Prize for Teacher Development. Thus, World Teachers' Day is not only a day to honor teachers but also focuses on the standards, rights, and conditions that form the foundation of the teaching profession.
