Padma Shri DY Patil:  Padma Shri Dr Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil, former Governor of  Bihar, Tripura, and West Bengal, passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90. Known as one of the prominent educationalists, his name became synonymous with the educational transformation in private schools across Maharashtra. He built a network of schools, colleges, universities, and hospitals to support the education of lakhs of students. As a founder of the vast D. Y. Patil Group, he established several high-end medical and engineering colleges to upskill the educational sector. He left with an unmatched legacy which is defined by his nation-building mission empowering generations with accessible, high-quality learning.

Born to an agricultural family on October 22, 1935, in Kolhapur district of Maharashtra,  Dnyandeo Yashwantrao Patil was always inclined towards education and public service that shaped his direction of life. He completed his graduation from Rajaram College, Kolhapur. Following this, he took up law at Shivaji University and graduated with first-class honors. His early educational journey laid the bedrock for his future philanthropic endeavours across educational and healthcare sectors.

Padma Shri DY Patil’s Career Advancements

Dr. D. Y. Patil has a remarkable career graph spanning from grassroots public service to attaining high-state governorship. He was elected to the Kolhapur Municipal Council in 1957. Subsequently, he served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the Maharashtra Vidhan Sabha representing the Panhala constituency from 1967 to 1978. He founded the expansive DY Patil Group, building a vast network of 180 institutions and universities in engineering, healthcare, and management sectors. Later, he served as the Governor of Tripura before becoming the Governor of Bihar from  2013 to 2014. For a brief period, he also held an additional charge as the Governor of West Bengal in 2014.
