India Education Reform:  A task force headed by Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani will look into how to improve India's examination systems and give a report to the government, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said in a video statement on Sunday. Based on that report, PM Modi said, the work to ensure the reliability of upcoming examinations will be carried out.

The announcement comes a day after the protest over exam paper leaks, led by the satirical political group Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), ended following Dharmendra Pradhan's resignation as Union Education Minister.

What did PM Modi ay Regarding Safety of Students?

PM Modi stated that the Government of India is continuously taking various measures for the future of students. He noted that those who tampered with students' futures are behind bars, and the government has established fast-track courts.

He also mentioned that a new law incorporating stringent legal provisions is being introduced in Parliament, reflecting the government's major effort to ensure accountability for examination-related offenses.

Why was Nandan Nilekani chosen to lead the task force?

PM Modi emphasised that the examination system must be trustworthy and transparent, with maximum utilisation of technology in the future. With this in mind, the government decided to constitute a high-powered task force led by the renowned global technology expert Nandan Nilekani.

This task force will specifically focus on examination reforms, and the government aims to take swift action to ensure the credibility of future examinations based on the task force's report.

Who Is Nandan Nilekani?

As a co-founder of the eGov Foundation, Nilekani has played a pivotal role in shaping the organization's mission to improve urban governance through technology. He has focused on creating citizen-centric platforms that assist urban local bodies in delivering better services.

With over two decades of leadership experience, including his tenure as the founding chairman of the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI), Nilekani possesses extensive experience in leveraging technology to create large-scale impact.

He also co-founded the EkStep Foundation, which aims to enhance foundational literacy and numeracy skills for millions of children through a digital platform.

Nilekani holds a bachelor's degree from IIT Bombay and has been honored with awards such as the Padma Bhushan and the Joseph Schumpeter Prize.
