According to the MTC, the newly introduced buses will operate on 84 routes, connecting residential neighbourhoods with schools and back. The services will make 134 trips daily, providing dedicated transportation during morning and evening peak hours for thousands of students across the city.

41 New School Buses to Begin Operations

The additional buses are part of the Tamil Nadu government's efforts to strengthen public transport for schoolchildren. The dedicated services are expected to significantly ease congestion on regular MTC buses and improve the daily commute for students. The new buses will begin operating from July 13.

Decision Based on Field Survey

The expansion follows a 10-day field assessment conducted by transport officials in Saidapet and other areas where a large number of students rely on public buses. During the survey, officials interacted with students, parents, teachers and school authorities to understand travel patterns, identify overcrowded routes and assess the need for dedicated school bus services.

Government Approval After Public Feedback

The proposal gained momentum after Saidapet MLA Arul Prakasam submitted a representation to Transport Minister A. Vijay Tamilan Parthiban on June 30, seeking improved transport facilities for students. Based on the survey findings, the government approved the expansion of the special school bus network across Chennai.

MTC to Monitor Demand

Earlier, MTC operated 25 dedicated school buses, covering 25 educational institutions with 50 daily trips. With the addition of 41 new buses, the corporation plans to continuously monitor passenger demand and may introduce more school special services on additional routes if required. The newly introduced buses were inspected by the Transport Minister along with MTC Managing Director T. Mohan before their rollout.
