The makers of Ramayana unveiled three new tracks at the grand album launch at Chennai Trade Centre on Wednesday evening. They were Main Ram, Jai Jai Ram (Orchestral) and Mangal Rang, and others. AR Rahman stole the show with the soulful piano arrangement.
I was at the event in Chennai, and the live performances after the album launch left me spellbound. Trust me, several listeners felt the same way. It was a key promotional step for a film that is being made for a wide release.

AR Rahman On Creating Ramayana Music
Oscar winner AR Rahman, who has worked with Hans Zimmer, one of Hollywood's most celebrated film composers, spoke about creating the music for the epic.
"When you look at Indian classical music, South Indian or North Indian, there is so much of bhakti, Krishna, Ram. And we all learnt those - from Kirtanai, Thumri, Bandish, Varnam. The basic foundation of music itself is bhakti."
He added, "So, you don't have to teach a composer here how to make music for Ramayana, right? In that inspiration, Namit has this great quality of seeing the music which is very rooted at the same time, will it work in the West? So, he might reject the first version and say he doesn't think it's working. After a month, he'll say let's play the first version."
"Because he's got so much on his head and it's a gamble, this movie - I understand his pressure. It's been a process of three years actually of giving him tunes. He sits and edits sometimes and I love the process. We have a whole album. Kumar Vishwas, the Hindi lyricist, is also an expert in bhakti music and the Ramayana; lyricists Karthik and Ilango (Tamil lyrics). It was really fun working with them."
Rahman also told the audience about an email he received in 2014 that seems to have predicted what is happening in his life today.
He said a man named Satish from New York had written to him after seeing him in a dream. In the email, Satish said he could picture Rahman creating a magical musical show with industry leaders, based on the Ramayan, and taking it across India and the world.
Rahman said Satish got in touch again just a day before the event and asked, "Remember this dream?" the composer said he was stunned that someone could imagine, back in 2014, what he is doing now.
