When Taal hit the theatres, it was lauded due to several reasons, but mainly because of its star-studded cast, including Anil Kapoor, Aishwarya Rai and Akshay Khanna. Taal was a superhit of the time and it went in to receive 12 nominations at the 45th Filmfare Awards, out of which it won six awards. Now after over three decades, director Subhash Ghai has hinted towards the making of Taal 2.

Ghai recently stirred excitement on social media by asking if a sequel to his 1999 cult classic Taal could be made today. The post quickly sparked buzz around the possibility of a follow-up to the iconic film. In his Instagram post, Subhash had shared, "PEACE OR PASSION? COSMIC OR COSMETIC ? INNER OR OUTER ? Is the story of TAAL - a film I dared to make. With no villain. No sex. No violence. Is story even GenZ n alpha love it today. N become a memorable. Can we make TAAL 2 ? Today Is a question in my mind."

In a conversation with Hindustan Times, Ghai clarified, "The post I shared has a question, and the audience will answer it. I have been facing this question for 15 years, ‘When are you going to make Taal again?’ Uss Taal ki jo energy hai, kitni powerful hai ki aaj ke Gen-Z bhi mujhe bol rahe hain Taal banaiye. But the easier the subject of Taal seems, the more difficult it is in reality. Uska poora script hum almost complete kar chuke hain aur abhi hum soch rahe hain yeh sahi samay hai, maybe we should make it. In order to make it, purity is very important."

"If you remember, Akshaye Khanna and Aishwarya Rai (Bachchan) were new in the industry when Taal was made. Isiliye woh purity screen par aayi. Anil Kapoor was a star and he was shown as a star in the film as well. After writing a good script the main responsibility is casting. Jo meri filmein nahi chali hain, uski wajah sirf galat casting thi," he further explained.

Subhash Ghai also highlighted the importance of casting, saying he liked the 2025 blockbuster Saiyaara directed by Mohit Suri and backed by Aditya Chopra for its fresh faces and natural energy. He added that while actors like Ahaan Panday and Aneet Padda have become stars, a film like Taal’s sequel would still need completely new characters, as required by the story. He also shared that Akshaye Khanna remains like family and they continue to meet often.
